How to Make a Resume for Your First Job (Step-by-Step)

Never made a resume before? No worries. Here's exactly how to create one from scratch — with examples you can copy.

You Don't Need Experience to Have a Great Resume

Every professional started with zero experience. What hiring managers want to see from first-time job seekers:

  • You can communicate clearly — your resume proves this
  • You've done something — projects, volunteer work, school activities all count
  • You're organized — a clean resume shows attention to detail

Step 1: Choose a Simple Format

For your first job, use this structure:

1. Name and contact info (email, phone, LinkedIn) 2. Summary (2-3 sentences about you) 3. Skills (what you can do) 4. Education (school, degree, graduation date) 5. Experience (work, volunteer, projects — anything counts)

Step 2: Write Your Summary

Don't write "Seeking an opportunity to grow." That says nothing.

Instead:

> "Recent marketing graduate with hands-on social media experience. Managed Instagram accounts for 2 student organizations, growing followers by 150% in one year. Eager to bring data-driven content strategy to a growth-focused team."

Step 3: List Your Skills

Think about what you can actually do:

Technical skills:
  • Software (Excel, Photoshop, Google Workspace)
  • Programming languages
  • Social media platforms
  • Data analysis
Soft skills:
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Problem-solving
  • Time management

Step 4: Fill In Experience

No paid work? No problem. Include:

  • Volunteer work — organized events, managed social media, tutored students
  • School projects — research papers, group presentations
  • Side projects — blog, YouTube channel, Etsy shop
  • Clubs and organizations — leadership roles, event planning
  • Part-time or informal work — babysitting, lawn care, freelance
Example:

> Social Media Manager | University Environmental Club | Sep 2024 - May 2026 > - Managed Instagram account, grew followers from 200 to 500 > - Created weekly content calendar and designed posts using Canva > - Organized 3 campus events with 100+ attendees each

Step 5: Education Section

Include:

  • School name and location
  • Degree and major
  • Graduation date (or expected)
  • GPA (only if 3.5+)
  • Relevant coursework
  • Academic achievements

Step 6: Format and Download

Keep it to:

  • One page — always
  • Clean font — Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica
  • 10-12pt font size — readable but compact
  • Consistent formatting — same style for all sections
  • PDF format — never send a .docx
